Favorite cookbooks, Alice's turn 1st

Last time I said I'd start a series of Favorite Recipe, from Favorite Cookbooks, and today is the oldest. My grandmother Alice gave this to me.  She had the book as a   young mother, and indeed, it has pencil scribbles from her first son inside the cover. That makes me smile.

Chickie supervises my baking, and lives in the Hoosier cupboard

The recipe is Apple Roll No. 1

Make a simple syrup of 1 cup water, and 1 cup sugar. (bring it to a boil til sugar is dissolved, and 1 minute longer)

Make biscuit dough of 1 cup flour, 2 teaspoons baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt,

with 2 tablespoons shortening

and about 5-6 Tablespoons water.

Roll out  about 7x10 inches, then cover with 1 1/2 cups chopped apple pieces, and cut into 6 slices.

Place into 8 inch baking pan, with the syrup on the bottom, and top with a bit of butter, sprinkle cinnamon and sugar on top.

Bake 350* 30 minutes.

Yum...

Off for a cup of tea, and my quiet time.
(I might have already had a little sampling. I ate Chickie's part. Mine is for supper😋)
Oh, serve this warm.......

I'll label this : recipes, fall
but it's good anytime you have a stray apple or two.
