Early June Days

We're a week into June, a favorite month for me.  School's out, the summer promises so many possibilities. Vacations, home times and family together...always the best.
At RedBarn we add to the fun  with  work which makes rest all the sweeter.
Our small rhubarb patch is about done.  The mandatory Rhubarb Custard pie (not pictured) came first. Last week I modified a WWII recipe that used one crust, and 3/4 c. jam  as sweetener,(any is fine), and a crumble on top
Freshly grated nutmeg makes it perfect....

Put up just a few jars of Rhubarb Jam. Just my  usual kind from an old paper clipping, which also includes crushed pineapple and strawberry jello...I know...but it's how it goes.  Added about a tablespoon of freshly grated ginger, and oh my....cuts thru the sweet.  Perfect!

Oh, this is Chickie, she lives in the Hoosier cupboard and she mostly supervises the baking.
Some days she gets annoyed that I don't pay enough attention to her.   Especially if I've run down to the chicken house to snatch a needed egg.  She gets really cackley and wonders if some clucking will convince me to tote her along in my apron pocket.  So far I haven't given in.....sigh...but I may have to at some point.  Last week she fell  off the shelf, and got her skinny little pink legs into a cup of buttermilk.  Goodness, I'm glad there isn't a cow here, or she would have wanted a ride to the barn to yell at the cow!
She is bossy.

The first week of June also produces these lovely roses. They were growing in a roadside ditch at our
Wooded Acres home. I named them Sarah Treat roses after a woman who lived there in the 1800's.
The roses have the most beautiful scent ever. The blossoms live just a day or so,  and it's a long time til the next June. They've been moved 3 times now...and bring me back to other Junes....and my younger daughter.    This month is her birthday.

When the kitchen got reorganized I purposely removed the old conspicuous wall clock that always hung above the sink.
I'm really liking the little clock on the shelf.  Not such an obvious obtrusion for me, though, truth be told, timers are necessary at times.  I have an old windup timer from the thrift shop that keeps things honest, and stops Chickie from squawking at me if something would burn.  Has it come to this?
